West Glamorgan v Somerset 1

04/01/2015 13:00

Off we set early Sunday morning passports at the ready and hoping we weren’t all still feeling the effects of the long break, too much Christmas Pudding and mince pies. After a  long drive and with Claire Harrison on translation duties, we arrived at a very chilly Gower sports college in deepest darkest Swansea.

Following a long, intense and comprehensive warm up the singles players went on court ..........

Pete Fairey obviously didn’t have many mince pies winning 21-16, 21-14

Dean Martin had a long close battle before winning his first ever singles match for the 1st team, 15-21, 22-20, 21-18, I’m reliably informed that the celebratory ‘YES’ was heard back in Somerset, well done Dean.

Whilst on the subject of very rare occurrences, it would seem that possibly the oldest Somerset player ever, Mr James Elkin, is struggling to remember the last time that Somerset 1st team ended the singles 2-2 but with both the men winning!!! Perhaps the ladies were more partial to mince pies than the men were !!

Amy Reddaway lost 15-21, 11-21

Laura Newman lost 13-21, 21-15, 11-21

Somerset 2-2 after the singles

Pete Fairey & Barry Harriss lost 18-21, 13-21 to the 1st pair and beat the 2nd pair 21-16, 21-10

Dean Martin & Andy Mullen lost to the 1st pair 4-21, 16-21, but carried on the day of firsts by winning their first mens doubles beating the 2nd pair 21-12, 21-18

Somerset ladies won all 4 rubbers fairly convincingly apart from one end, where Claire Harrison decided she didn’t want to be left out of the ‘Day of Firsts’ and won an end 30-29 for the first time.

Kelly Fairey & Laura Newman beat the 1st pair 21- 13, 21-14 and the 2nd pair 21-7, 21-15

Amy Reddaway & Claire Harrison beat the 1st pair 30-29, 21-18 and the 2nd pair 21-7, 21-6

Somerset were 8-4 up going onto the mixed needing two rubbers to get the maximum 3 points;

Pete & Laura had a tough match and lost 14-21, 12-21

Barry & Kelly won 21-8, 21-14

Andy and Amy won 22-20, 18-21, 21-19

Match won by Somerset 10-5. This match meant at the halfway stage of the season having played and beaten all the other counties once, Somerset 1 were top of the league, well done team J
