Somerset O40s vs Wilts (H)
Team: Barry Harriss, Simon Ashenden, Andrew Carpenter, Jason Flagg, Nikki Harriss, Fiona Rooke, Wendy Field, Sarah-Jane Trask
Nearly managed a full 40s team, but thanks to Barry Harris from the 50s A for helping out. Slightly differently from the usual, the match was on 4 courts starting at 2pm so the players were unable to watch and support each other as much as usual.
Mark Yeandle was missing the match due to his Andover shoulder injury not healing in time, but this led to some discussion on pairings. Simon and Barry stormed to a 2 set win, followed by another great win by Andrew and Jason. Well done boys for a good start.
Nikki and Fiona looked calm and collected in their win, but Wendy and Sarah-Jane didnt quite manage to get going and lost theirs in 2.
Andrew and Jason dropped a 3 setter, but Barry and Simon stormed to a second hard hitting win, meaning the boys had managed to win 3 out of the 4 mens doubles. Good result boys!
Wendy and Sarah-Jane had a really tight battle losing 20-22, 17-21 accompanied by much coughing from Wendy. Nikki and Fiona coolly ran in a 2 set win, definitely looking better than the scoresheet. The one time the captain leaves the players to put in scores and what a mess! Some results taking 3 attempts to put in the right places.
So all down to the mixed with Somerset up 5-3. The first lead of the season.
Barry and Fiona and Nikki and Jason decided to make the rest of the team nervous and took 3 sets each to get to their deserved wins. Sarah-Jane and Simon didnt quite manage to squeak their 3 set epic, but Wendy and Andrew managed a 2 set win.
After the match both teams had a good natter and face filling session in and around the kitchen as the quick pace of the match meant there hadnt been time to put up a table in the fitness area after the kids party had left.
Result Somerset win 8-4
