Rally 21 brings Badminton players of all abilities together

Thirty-five Badminton players had a smashing time when the 2nd Rally 21 tournament took place on Sunday 17 February.

Rally 21 - organised by South Somerset Community Badminton Network with the support of South Somerset District Council - brought social and league players from across Somerset together at Stanchester Leisure Centre.

The aim of Rally 21 was to give people interested in badminton, who would otherwise have limited opportunities to compete in tournaments, the chance to play competitively.

South Somerset Community Badminton Network Coach Stephen Pritchard was delighted with turnout for the event.  Stephen said: “This event built on the strengths of the first tournament last year.  The feedback has been fantastic and it was encouraging to see players of different ability levels enjoying badminton together.  I would like to thank Jane Lipton for organising this event on behalf of the South Somerset Community Badminton Network.”

“There are two Social Series events taking place in April in Huish Episcopi and Crewkerne and I really hope that the Rally 21 event will continue to act as a springboard for further competition in South Somerset. The Social Series is specifically aimed at social badminton players who are new to the sport.”

Jake Hannis, Senior Sport and Healthy Lifestyles Officer at South Somerset District Council, said:  “Following the success of the first Rally 21 last year I am pleased that the event was once again very popular.  We know that there are lots of people who play social badminton and Rally 21 provides a competitive opportunity for these players, but also for those who have competitive league experience.  The South Somerset Community Badminton Network is building an excellent programme of competition for both juniors and seniors and we hope it will have a lasting legacy in the area.”

Cllr Sylvia Seal, Leisure and Culture Portfolio Holder added:  "Following the excitement of London 2012, getting people to try out different sports is an important part of the work we do. I hope that the Community Badminton Network continues to increase participation in the sport and offer exciting opportunities for players of all levels.”
