O50s vs Avon (home)
Venue: Westland Sport Centre, Yeovil
The team was as follows:- Men - Martin Gossage, Tony Eyles, Neil Robson and Sammy McGrory and Ladies - Jane Lipton, Karen Potter, Val Fraser and Jackie Malton
This was the O50s first match of the season. In the first round on the mens doubles, unfortunately Tony Eyles sustained an injury during the first mens game and although he managed to finish the game, he decided not to continue.
The ladies doubles were close in score and whilst Avon won the opening 2 games, in the reverse matches, Somerset's Jane Lipton and Karen Potter fought a tight match to win 23-21 in the third.
For the reverse mens, another team player, Martin Thomas, who only came to watch the game was asked to fill in for the injured Tony Eyles and the opposition agreed the substitution. So super sub Martin Thomas played the second men's with Martin Gossage and beat the Avon 3 & 4 pair 22-20 and 23-21. What a result. The pair didnt have much trouble remembering the name of their partner!
In the mixed Jane Lipton shone again, this time with Neil Robson, with the pair just losing out with the deciding 3rd end finishing 24-22 in Avon's favour.
All in all it was a very close match and the final score does not show how tight the scores were all the way through. The team are looking forward to the Masters Championships weekend in January (14/15).
Final result: Somerset lost 2-10.
