O40s Challenge Weekend at Andover

14/01/2017 12:00

What a relief. For a change the 40s team had a good starting time for both days and no hugely long waits between matches.

Like previous years there were players there for individual days, but most stayed overnight in Andover on the Saturday.

With 5 other teams in the division there were 3 games on the Sat and only 2 on the Sunday. Thank you to Alistair McGuinn for travelling up with Jason on the Sat and for Andrew Carpenter for joining us on the Sunday despite feeling rather poorly.

The teams was Jason Flagg, Simon Ashenden (Captain), Ian Pocock, Alistair McGuinn, Andrew Carpenter, Sarah-Jane Trask, Wendy Field, Nikki Harriss, Fiona Rooke.

Day 1 matches

IoW - Somerset Win 3-1 - Simon and Ian struggled to get into their stride and lost a long 3 set match. Well done to Ian for finding enough rackets, trainers and appropriate clothing to play Badminton after his recent house move. Nikki and Fi romped to a win in the ladies doubles, Jason and Sarah-Jane had a good win on their first outing together for a while, followed by a good start for newbie Alistair McGuinn with Wendy Field.

Sussex - Somerset win 4-0  Simon and Jason won the mens doubles. Nikki and Fi won the ladies doubles. Wendy and Ian took their time to win their first mixed doubles together in ...... years in 3 sets. He only hit her twice with a shuttle, but in the process proving that she does occasionally go to the net, despite comments to the contrary. Alistair and Sarah-Jane won by walkover.

Buckinghamshire - Draw 2-2    We started with a draw thanks to a good win for newbies Ian Pocock and Alistair McGuinn, a win by walkover for Wendy and Sarah-Jane, followed by a loss by Nikki and Simon in their first game together in a while and a very close loss 22-20 / 24-22 by Fi and Jason.

Saturday evening

With 2 players having brought their children all of the players staying overnight in Andover decamped to the local pub for some games of Top Trumps, some good food and good company. We now know more about comic book superheroes, Sarah-Janes new front door is tough to open, most networks dont have good signal in the pub, dont try the pidgeon but the puddings were fantastic.

Day 2 matches

Oxfordshire 2 - Somerset win 4-0     A very poorly Andrew Carpenter struggled manfully through a tough 3 setter with Ian winning 22-20 in the third. A solid win by Sarah-Jane and Wendy in the ladies doubles. Back to winning ways for the more usual pairing of Nikki and Jason in a solid 3 setter. Fi and Simon enjoyed a good win in straight sets.

Avon - Somerset win 3-1    Jason and Simon continued some good form from the rest of the season in winning the mens doubles. Fi and Nikki romped home easy winners. Ian and Wendy snuck in a noisy win at first mixed with the regular calls of "yours Wendy" being heard through the hall. Andrew and Sarah-Jane took the first end, but were unable to maintain that form and dropped the other 2 sets.

Final Result

Somerset O40s won the 2B division and will be promoted to division 1 for next season and hopefully play at Bournemouth for a change. Well done to Matthew, Adam and Alex for being great support to your mothers and the rest of the team for the weekend. A pleasure to have you with us! Somerset players were stacked through the top of the players stats table for the division.
