Berkshire 1 v Somerset 1
Sunday 15th March Somerset 1 headed off on the long journey to Reading to play Berkshire. Much to Dean and Amy’s shock and amazement Claire Harrison was trusted with the map and directions in one of the cars. The driver’s decision to trust her proved a good one as despite having the map upside down on several occasions we successfully arrived at the venue in plenty of time.
This was the crunch fixture of the season, a good win today would pretty much see Somerset winning the division. A tough match was expected, and boy did we get what we expected .......
Pete Fairey played a strong on- form opponent losing 15-21, 12-21, and Dean Martin lost 14-21, 16-21.
Amy Reddaway lost a marathon high standard encounter 22-20, 16-21, 19-21, and Laura Newman struggling with a cold lost 12-21, 7-21.
Somerset 4-0 down after the singles and the likelihood of a good match victory was slipping away fast.
The ladies had a seriously good battle all afternoon in their toughest match of the season with some very long hard fought games. It was satisfying to see them have some really good games for a change, and even more satisfying to see them once again win them all. Well done girls. Kelly Fairey and Laura beat the first pair 21-15, 19-21, 21-18 and the second pair 21-12, 18-21, 21-16. Claire Harrison and Amy beat the second pair 19-21, 22-20, 21-16 and the first pair 21-19, 21-9
The men knew they were in for a tough time against strong opposition, and thats what happened. Pete and Barry Harriss lost to the first pair 7-21, 13-21 and the second pair 14-21, 16-21. Dean and Andy Mullen lost to the second pair 9-21, 8-21 and the first pair 18-21, 7-21.
Somerset 8-4 down going into the mixed, the best we could hope for was to get a point by getting 6 rubbers.
Pete and Laura lost 16-21, 13-21. Barry and Kelly won 21-14, 21-16, and Andy and Amy lost 19-21, 16-21.
Match won by Berkshire 10-5. A sound thrashing left our division winning hopes in tatters. Due to a lot of long games and shortage of court time the match was a late finish and no time to stop at the Harvester all you can eat salad bar .............. L A long disappointing drive home, many thanks again to Claire for navigating and keeping a very tired sleep deprived driver awake all the way home.
