22/02/2015 12:00

Sunday 22nd February Somerset 1 headed off to play Avon 2, hoping for maximum points to keep us clear at the top and put the pressure on Berkshire who were just one point behind us.

Pete Fairey pulled off a good victory after being an end and several points down in the second end, winning 16-21, 26-24, 21-18, and Dean Martin just lost a close couple of ends 18-21, 18-21.

Jenny Naylor had a convincing win 21-11, 21-6, as did Laura Newman 21-12, 21-6

Somerset 3-1 up after the singles.

The ladies once again proved way too strong for the opposition, with Kelly Fairey and Laura beating the first pair 21-11, 21-6 and the second pair 21-12, 21-9, and Claire Harrison and Jenny beat the second pair 21-16, 21-13 and the first pair 21-8, 21-18.

Having taken two rubbers off the men at home, hopes were high of getting a good result away, but unfortunately the men played below themselves on the day. Pete and Barry Harriss lost to the first pair 11-21, 21-16, 16-21 and the second pair 12-21, 14-21, and Dean and Andy Mullen lost to the second pair 18-21, 22-24 and the first pair 12-21, 21-17, 14-21.

Somerset 7-5 up going into the mixed. Pete and Laura won 21-11, 21-19, Barry and Kelly won 21-18, 16-21, 21-12, and Andy and Claire lost 18-21, 15-21.

Match won by Somerset 9-6. A good win but a feeling of disappointment that it was definitely a point dropped by not getting all three, a feeling made far far worse by the fact that the help yourself Toby Carvery was fully booked with no spaces left ..........  Deep depression ensued for the drive home  .............  L
