U17's v Devon Sunday 19th January

19/01/2014 20:44
36 - 0 we lost!!!  The score by no way reflected what actually happened in the match.  We unfortunately only had 3 girls able to play - and I wanted to thank Ellie Slawin, Georgia Ley and Meg Pressley-Smith for playing.  Along with all the boys Callum Pilton, Rhys Coates, Connor Robson, James OConnor, Sam Green and Aston Withey.  Everyone of you were a credit to Somerset and played really well.

Again what some close matches there were. We lost 6 - 30 but I must say every game was fought for. Congratulation to Sam green who made his debut and then won his singles match. Rhys and Connor won two doubles matches along with Callum and James and Rhys and Georgia won their mixed. The match was played in a great spirit. Well done everyone.

Somerset v Cornwall 3rd November 2013

16/11/2013 20:59
This was a tough match for Somerset as we started with only 4 girls due to sickness which was a real shame.  Callum Pilton did really well and won his singles for us but we then had to wait until the ladies doubles before we won another rubber but Ellie Slawin and Alex Crossley did really well to win this rubber.   Although we lost 34-2 some of the matches were really close and it was a shame that we just couldn't pull off some more wins.  Well done Somerset for playing the match with great sportsmanship and  enthusiasm.

Somerset U17 v Avon away Sunday 6th October

06/10/2013 19:56
Well done to Sophie Cording, Meg Pressley-Smith and Ollie Heywood for making their debut for Somerset at Avon.   The match was won by Avon 31 to 5 but many matches were closely contested by the boys and girls and it was a shame that the result didn't reflect this.  Ellie Slawin won her singles easily and the boys didn't quite manage to win a singles although Callum Pilton, Rhys Coates, Matt England and Tom Garty came close.  Callum Pilton and James O'Connor won two boys doubles Rhys Coates and Tom Garty came close to nearly win a doubles. and then Ellie Slawin and Alex Crossley won two doubles matches Georgia Ley and Meg Pressley-Smith came close to winning one of their doubles matches.  The mixed doubles were all won by Avon.    The...

Somerset U17 Championships Results 2013-14

06/10/2013 19:53
This was a very close fought  final in the boys singles between Callum Pilton and Rhys Coates with Callum just easing through in the second set after setting.  The Ladies Singles was poorly supported  in this age group but never the less the final was won by Ellie Slawin and this was her first year in this age group, Ellie beat Georgia Ley in the final.  The boys doubles was won by Callum Pilton and James O’Connor  who beat Rhys Coates and Connor Robson – who has just returned to County badminton after a long  break from sport.  The ladies doubles was won by Ellie Slawin and Ellie Gardner who beat Meg Pressley-Smith and Georgia Ley.   Overall the competition was played in a very good spirit and everyone was exceptionally well behaved and competed in...

Somerset v Abergavenny and Hereford

01/05/2013 22:07
On Saturday 27th April a team from Somerset made up of Jordana Dabinet, Ellie Slawin, Tom Reddaway, Ben Maddison, Elliot Beresford and Thomas Rees went all the way to Abergavenny in South Wales. There we played, in effect, 3 matches in one afternoon. We played 2 teams from the Abergavenny club and Hereford. The match results against Abergavenny were a draw and a win. The majority of the Singles matches against our boys were very exciting and quite close against some very tough opposition. The girls proved to be too strong (and too tall) for their opposition. Every player managed to win some (and lose some). The doubles matches were close as well with the same mixed result. The intrepid travellers enjoyed the competition and we have been challenged...

Somerset U15 vs Jersey

01/05/2013 22:04
Friendly match v Jersey – 20/21st April – 2013 This weekend the Somerset U15 squad hosted Jersey’s U16 squad. Jersey were expected in January but due to snow falling on the Friday, before they were due to fly, the weekend was postponed. Fortunately this time the weather was much better and even allowed for a bit of sightseeing at Lyme Regis before arriving in Yeovil . Jersey and Somerset played two matches, one on the Saturday and one on the Sunday at Westlands Sports Centre. Saturday’s game was a very close affair with Jersey winning 18 -17; unfortunately we had to concede one girls’ doubles due to injury. Each player had the opportunity to play 2 singles and 2 level doubles. After the match we held a social event at Westlands Leisure Complex. The food was great and both teams had an...

U17 Shires League Match vs Hampshire

16/04/2013 20:50
We all spent 2 hours in the car driving to Hampshire from Somerset and got well beaten! The final score was 20-0 and every single match was lost in 2 straight sets except Kathryn Saywell managed to get to 3 but lost in the end. Everyone played to the best of their ability but there was nothing we could do except support each other. The team was Jenny Naylor, Kathryn Saywell, Jordana Dabinett and Izzy Lewis for the girls and Fabrice Le Blanc, Ashley Hembry, Eric Tsai and James O'Connor for the boys team.

U15 Somerset v Wiltshire 14/4/13 at Westlands Sports Centre

16/04/2013 20:49
Well done to Matt England and Dan Hiscock for winning their level doubles match against Wiltshire’s no 2’s , to Ellie Slawin and Ellie Gardener for also winning their level doubles game against Wiltshire’s third pair and to Will Perry and Ellie Gardener for winning their mixed match in two straight games.  Somerset was unlucky not to win more with another 11 matches played between the two counties going to three games. There were many excellent rallies played between the two counties with good attacking play from Somerset, good use of tactics to provide opportunities to attack opponents, and moving opponents out of position to create openings for winning shots. We play our last match of the season next weekend when we host Jersey at Westlands Sports Centre on the Saturday and Sunday...

Yesterday we played a friendly match against Gloucester at Severn Vale School. The squad consisted of six U15 boys, 2 U17 girls and 2 U15 girls. Charlie took a game in his singles match and won a doubles match with his partner Tom Reddaway. The following players played for Somerset against Avon – Rhys Coates, Tom Garty, Tom Reddaway, Dan Hiscock, Bradley O Connor, Matt England, Elli Slawin, Jordana Dabinett, Georgia Ley, Charlotte Peach, Trixie Nicholson, Kayee Bayley. Today’s match proved to be the most successful match so far this season for the U15 squad, showing that the squad are continuing to make progress.
